'A' block was erected between 1860-67 as barracks accommodation for officers of the British Army 40th regiment. The design was done by Public Works Department architect, Gustav Joachimi. The building is the most important of the 19th century barracks complex as it was the centre of defence headquarters administration in Australia from 1860-1960.
